MOHALI: I wish he would have missed his bus today. That was what the father of 16-year-old Mehakvir Singh said after he found out that his son had died in a road accident near Kharar on Tuesday.
He had a glass of milk and got ready. He had been going to school on his own, but today the bus came 5 minutes early. He ran to catch it. I even told him to go slow.
But after a few minutes, we heard a loud noise. We saw that the school bus had overturned and our children trapped inside. We extricated them out and took them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared my son dead, said Darbar Singh, a resident of Mammupur village, who had plans to gift his son a new motorcycle on his birthday on September 9 for securing admission into Class XI.
He did not like going for tuitions on a bicycle and had been pressing me for a new bike. I had been saving money and looking forward to see a smile on his face as he always made me happy by scoring well in his exams, said Darbar Singh, who owns a milk dairy. My son was very good in studies. He did not roam around with other boys in the village and never missed his school, he added. I did not know how to inform my wife. I first told her that Mehakvir was serious and then with a lot of courage that he had died, he said.
Meanwhile, father of the school bus driver, Harvinder Singh (45), who also died in the mishap, said he was always careful while driving. Kuldeep Singh said Harvinder was a very good driver just like his brother.
